John William Flynn of Grand Junction, CO passed away April 4th,
from Alzheimer’s.
John was born in Fort Worth, TX on September 9, 1939, to John V.
and Rose T. Flynn. John spent part of his childhood in Montrose,
CO and graduated from Montrose High School. He studied engineering
at the University of New Mexico and the University of
Colorado, where he was in the Naval ROTC. He began working in
radio and television as a reporter and was the anchor newsman for
KCMO in Kansas City, KS. While in the media business he also
lived and worked in Lincoln, NE, New Orleans, LA, and Houston,
TX. Later John represented electronic devices for Maury E. Bettis
and Company. When the owner, Bob Perry retired, John purchased
the company. He honored Mr. Perry by paying the expenses for a
farewell trip to Las Vegas for Perry and his former employees. That
was typical of John’s generosity. He lived his life quietly and always
put others’ needs and wants ahead of his own. His friends remarked
about his pride in dressing well, his unfailing courtesy, and
his sense of humor.
John enjoyed antique cars. He was a long time member of the Pontiac
Club serving as it’s President and writing the newsletter. In his
teens, John built model airplanes and started his decades-long interest
in ham radio. He also loved classical music, especially opera.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and his son, Paul Edward.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon of Grand Junction; son, John W.
Jr.; step-son, Jerry; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his brother, James P. Flynn of Delray
Beach, FL and his sister, Kathleen G. Flynn of Arvada, CO.
Graveside services are scheduled Saturday, April 7, 2012 at 2:00
p.m. at the Grand View Cemetery in Montrose, CO.
