Joan Louise Gerrard, 68, died, Sept. 14, 2012 at her home in Eagle, after a very heroic battle against peritoneal cancer.
Joan was born Aug. 1, 1944, in Rock Springs, Wyo., to Fred and Mary (Ferlic) Vehar. She attended school in Rock Springs, graduating from Rock Springs High School.
Joan worked for the Rock Springs School district, retiring in 2006.
Joan moved to Eagle, in 2008, seemingly to find what made her most happy in life: helping others, spending time and playing cards with friends at the senior center, and being a full-time grandma, even to adult kids. By those she assisted, she was called “St. Joan of Eagle,” and by anyone else, she preferred to be called by her most favorite title, “Grandma.” She loved watching the grandkids, whether it be at sports, music, or just growing and changing. She was very proud of each child and was looking forward to seeing how incredible each of them turned out.
She is survived by her children, Raelene Beveridge of Grand Junction, Rick (LaVina) Beveridge of Eagle, Lisa Skazinski (Joe) of Longmont, Mary Lou (Jeremy) Yeik of Eagle, and Teresa (Robert) Murray of Ogden, Utah; her sister, Mary Kay (Sonny) Oliver; and many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Gerrard; her sister, Patricia Krmpotich, and infant daughter, Teri Lynn.
A celebration of her life will be held today, Sept. 20, at 4 p.m., in Eagle at the Eagle Ranch Pavilion. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions in her name be made to the Eagle Valley Seniors, Box 5762, Eagle, CO 81631 — note “Joan Gerrard memorial,” or the “Shaw Regional Cancer Center, Edwards, CO.” Letters or cards recounting fond memories with Joan would also be greatly appreciated.
