Surrounded by her family at her
Grand Junction home, Hazelle L.
Kretlow stepped into the arms of
her Savior on March 25, 2012.
She was 82 years young.
Hazelle was born in Galva, Illinois
on February 21, 1930, the
first of seven children of Herman
Ma n t h e a n d E t h e l ( S h r a d e r )
Manthe. She spent her childhood
and attended schools in Galva. In 1949, she married William I. Kegebein
and settled in Kewanee, Illinois where they added two daughters
to the family. William passed away in 1959. Soon after his
death, Hazelle packed up her 1957 Chevy Bel Air and moved to
California with her young daughters to start a new life. She worked
for Sears in Inglewood, California. She attended night school and
graduated from Inglewood High School, the same year as her oldest
daughter. She later moved to San Clemente, California and then
joined her daughters in Grand Junction 34 years ago. She married
John A. Kretlow in 1982, adding seven more children to the family.
A homemaker and seamstress, Hazelle will be remembered for her
ability to draw people into her circle of caring, her faith, and for her
creative, fun-loving spirit. She served as a greeter at Fellowship
Church for 20 years, where she also volunteered to help with memorial
services and the Prom, a dance for people with physical and
mental challenges. Always a bit of an adventuress, she even
zip-lined across the Colorado River for her 80th birthday. Hazelle
reveled in any event that brought together friends and family, and
she prayed faithfully for all she loved. Her greatest legacy is her extravagant
love.
Hazelle is survived by her husband, John; daughters, Kathleen
(Robert) Keeney of Montrose, and Patti (Dennis) Hill of Grand
Junction; step-children, Robert (Jan) Kretlow of Greensboro, NC;
Susan Kretlow of CA; Rose (Ken) Pryzbyliski of Wausau, WI; Barbara
(Tom) Kretlow of Naples, FL; Joseph (Nancy) Kretlow of
Oakland, CA; Joan (Farhad) Kretlow, and Lynda (Susan) Kretlow of
Oakland, CA; one brother, Richard Bose and two sisters, Jean
Ackerman and Dorothy (Don) Norberg; 13 grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, William I. Kegebein;
two brothers, Dale Manthe and Harold Manthe, and one sister,
Mary DeCrane.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Hospice and Palliative
Care of Western Colorado for their superlative support and love.
She will be cremated and laid to rest at the Veteran's Memorial
Cemetery of Western Colorado during a private family gathering
prior to the memorial service.
Hazelle's memorial service will be a celebration of a life well lived
and of the assurance of resurrection in Jesus Christ. She hoped attendees
would wear bright colors in the spirit of that celebration.
The memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2012, at
11:00 a.m. at Fellowship Church at the northwest corner of 24 Road
and I-70. Lunch will follow.
