Wilma was born February 12,
1915, to Ferdinand and Harriet
Zipse in Jewell, Kansas and later
moved to western Colorado. She
graduated from Grand Junction High School, then attended Mesa
College, University of Northern Colorado, and Western State College
where she received her teaching degree.
She was married to John Whittier in 1937, in Grand Junction. She
enjoyed her faith, family and friends, as many enjoyed her piano
playing, oil paintings and cooking. Her faith was a blessing to many
as she shared her talents and gifts in the church.
She was employed as an elementary school teacher. Wilma’s first
teaching position was in a one room school house. She later completed
30 years as an elementary teacher in School District 51,
where she retired in 1982. Her membership in Delta Kappa Gamma
was very meaningful during this time.
Wilma was one of four siblings in her family, Clarence (Evelyn)
Zipse, and Loren (Francis) Zipse, all deceased; and Marian Zipse
who currently resides in Grand Junction.
Survivors also include her two sons, Charles Allen (Dorothy, deceased)
Whittier, and Dave Kent (Cindy) Whittier; four grandchildren;
several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews .
As time has dealt its impact on her, she was blessed to the final
heartbeat and ready to move on. She will be deeply missed.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care,
