Dale Nelson Smith passed away on February 24, 2012, at Hospice
& Palliative Care Center in Grand Junction. Cancer was the winner.
Dale was born in Garnet, Kansas, the son of an ordained United
Presbyterian Minister, they lived across the Midwest. Pittsburgh, PA
was home until he joined the Air Force. He married Alice Valencia
in 1967, and moved to Mesa, Arizona, where he graduated from
Arizona State University with a bachelor of science degree in l974.
They were married for 44 years, and had two children.
He was a partner with Smith Lurvey & CO, an accounting firm for
more than 28 years, retiring in 2004.
Dale loved anything to do with cars; restoring Mustangs, buying,
races, sponsorship. Hill climbs were his passion. He organized and
was race director for The Lands End Hill Climb for several years.
He sponsored several racers at hill climbs for years. Mustangs were
his favorite, participating in car shows across the country.
Surviving family members are wife, Alice; daughter, Valerie; sister,
Carol, and eight brothers and sisters-in-law. Dale’s son, Charles
died in 2004.
Memorial contributions to Hospice & Palliative Care Center of
Grand Junction, CO.
A graveside Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, April
18, 2012, at 3:00 p.m. at the Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery of Western
Colorado, 2830 Riverside Parkway.
