Longtime Grand Junction resident
Dorothy Mae Henrikson
passed away on Friday, March 16,
2012, in Colorado Springs after a
brief illness. She was 90.
Dorothy was born April 5, 1921,
to Rose L. and Marvin C. Pettigrew
in Loveland, Colorado. She
graduated from Loveland High
S c h o o l . S h e w o r k e d a t
Woolworth's prior to her marriage in Loveland, to Milton Emmett
"Mel" Henrikson, her highschool sweetheart, on March 15, 1942.
The couple moved to Grand Junction in 1949, following Mel's
graduation from the Colorado University School of Pharmacy. Dorothy
concentrated her energies on being a Mother and Homemaker
until 1959, when she returned to the workforce. She worked for a
time at C. D. Smith's Pharmaceutical Warehouse, and in the early
1960's went to work for the City of Grand Junction as the Municipal
Court Clerk. She retired from that position in 1982. Following her
retirement from the city, she became an Avon Representative, an
activity she continued to enjoy for many years.
Dorothy is survived by a daughter, Connie and husband, Albert
Stevens of Colorado Springs; a son, Ken "Fuzzy" and wife, Kristi
Henrikson of Fruita; grandchildren, Danielle and husband, Scott
Rizzo of Louisville, Kentucky; Shawna and husband, Danio Farnese
of Clifton; Patrick and wife, Jessica Brady of Grand Junction;
Joshua Henrikson of Eugene, Oregon, and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Milton; a sister,
Mildred Carlson of Towson, Maryland, and a brother, Marvin Pettigrew
of Cody, Wyoming.
After their retirement, both Dorothy and Mel enjoyed traveling and
were fortunate to be able to take a number of interesting trips with
family and friends. Dorothy also kept busy with crocheting many
lovely items for friends and with her yard and flower gardens. She
was especially fond of her beds of roses. She remained an active
member of the First Presbyterian Church, and the local chapter of
P.E.O., a philanthropic organization for women, until the time of her
passing. She also enjoyed the local dinner theater, golf, and was an
avid football fan. Dorothy's family and many friends knew her to be
a compassionate and gracious lady and often wondered how such a
petite frame could hold such an enormous heart.
A memorial service will be held Friday, April 27, 2012, at 1:00
p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 3940 27 1/2 Road. If you
would prefer to make a donation to a charity in her name rather than
send flowers, the family asks that the donation be made to the National
Alzheimer's Association at one of the following addresses:
Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 8th Avenue, 7th Floor,
New York, NY 10001 or Alzheimer's Disease Research, 22512
Gateway Center Drive, PO Box 1950, Clarksburg, MD 20871.
