"Jim" Taylor, age 70 of Grand Junction, Colorado, died March 8,
2012 of complications from cancer.
Jim was born to Bernie James and Esther Corey Taylor on June 15,
1941 in Denver, Colorado. In 1957 after a childhood spent in Denver
and Nederland, he moved with his parents to Grand Junction
where he would spend the majority of his life.
Following graduation from Grand Junction High School in 1959,
he joined the Army National Guard, serving eight years.
During his years in the Army National Guard, Jim met and courted
Grand Junction native Mary E. Dowell. They married on November
8, 1963 beginning a partnership that spanned almost five decades.
Jim's life was defined by his passions; his fascination with history
fed a lifelong pursuit of antique collecting, his need for adrenaline
gave way to stock car racing and vintage car collecting, and his love
of nature and the outdoors led to hobbies such as hunting and fishing,
as well as forming the basis for his belief in conservation.
Model railroading, his primary indoor hobby, was an interest
passed down from his father and grandfather. He spent years researching,
accumulating resources and constructing his recreation of
the Colorado Midland Railroad. It has been featured in multiple periodicals.
Jim was active for many years with the Wheels West Car Club of
Grand Junction, and the Grand Valley Model Railroading club.
His fascination with autos and engines led to his life's work as a
mechanic. Jim worked at the Ford dealership when it was located on
Main Street, and for the City of Grand Junction. He retired in 1991.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his
wife Mary and daughter Sherry Warner of Grand Junction. Funeral
services will be held at 4:00 pm Thursday, March 15 at the First
United Methodist Church of Grand Junction.
Memorial contributions can be made to St. Mary's Hospital Foundation
supporting the Oncology Department and Cancer Survivorship
programs, or Roice- Hurst Humane Society.
