Guy D. Cherp, 76, passed away
March 13, 2012, at his home in
Pikeville, TN.
He was born July 21, 1935, in
Minneapolis, MN, to Donald and
Roma Heiman Cherp. Guy rode
into Grand Junction in 1954, on
his '52 Norton motorcycle when
his family relocated to Grand
Junction from Minnesota. He
graduated from Mesa Junior College in 1957, where he played football
and was given an Honorable Mention for his All Conference
participation in 1956. He then graduated from Western State College
in 1959, and went on to teach English and Journalism at Gunnison
High School.
He married Martha Hart Tomlinson on November 30, 1963. Guy
purchased Coors of Grand Junction in 1969, and was instrumental in
bringing the Coors Bicycle Classic and the Crime Stoppers Golf
Tournament to Grand Junction. He had a great deal of civic pride
and a strong work ethic. The motto of his business was "The Best
Can Be Done Better" which he instilled in his family as well. He
was the self-appointed "Mayor of Cisco, UT" who never met a
stranger, a self-professed "Bon Vivant and Raconteur" with a great
love of travel.
Guy is survived by his wife, Hart Tomlinson Cherp of Pikeville,
TN; children, Amy (Baiju) Coilparampil of Monroe, CT; Macon of
Atlanta, GA; Ada of Pikeville, TN, and Guy II of Sun Valley, ID;
grandchildren, Lily and Jacob Coilparampil and Grace, Henry and
Frances Cherp; brother, Robin (Sandra) Cherp of Grand Junction;
sisters, Vicki (Tom) Waddill and Joy Valentini, both of California.
Please join us for a casual, informal celebration of Guy's life on
Monday, July 23rd at 5:00 p.m., at The Recital Hall in Moss Performing
Arts Building at Colorado Mesa University at the corner of
12th Street and Bunting Avenue.
Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to The Guy
Cherp Memorial Fund, 12809 Park Rd., Pikeville, TN 37367.
