Frank A. Wells passed away at
his home of 60 years near Mack,
Colorado on March 16, 2012. He
recently celebrated his 87th birthday
at home with his family.
Frank, born on March 4, 1925, in
M e s s e x , C o l o r a d o , w a s t h e
youngest son and the ninth of ten
children born to John Edward
Wells and Elizabeth Humbargar.
In 1928, the Wells family moved their farming operation to western
Colorado by train. The family farmed with horses and Frank's childhood
experiences sparked a lifelong love of farming and draft
horses.
Frank attended grade school in Loma. He met Laurene Conrad
while attending school in Fruita and they were married on August
15, 1943. In 1951, Frank and Laurene purchased a farm on R 1/2
Road in New Liberty that would be their home for the rest of their
lives. It was there that they raised their five children and taught by
example the values of hard work and caring for one another. Frank
and Laurene were a team for sixty years and celebrated their anniversary
in 2003.
After Laurene passed away in 2004, and farming no longer occupied
all of his time, Frank kept busy caring for a small menagerie of
animals and driving his team of Belgian draft horses in weddings
and parades. Frank especially delighted in caring for the lambs as
they were born in the spring.
Frank was dearly loved and is survived by his children, Louise
Wells of Lakewood; Kathy (John) Hurt of Fruita; Marty (Dennis)
Hardrick of Loma; Dale Wells of Loma, and John Wells of Mack.
He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Jonna Hanson, Ginger
(Ron) Richardson, Kelly (Josh) McCollum, Laine Wells, Curtis
Wells, Kevin Hardrick and Kaitlin Hardrick; seven great-grandchildren,
and numerous nieces and nephews.
Frank's wonderful sense of humor and his wealth of wisdom and
experience will be missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers,
memorial contributions may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care
of Western Colorado, 3090 12th Street, Unit B, Grand Junction, CO
81506 or University of Colorado Cancer Center at Anschutz Medical
Campus, c/o University of Colorado Foundation, 4740 Walnut
Street, Boulder, CO 80301.
A rosary will be recited on Tuesday, March 20th at 7:00 p.m. at
Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fruita and services will be held at
Sacred Heart on Wednesday, March 21st at 10:00 a.m.
