children at his bedside. He was 90
years old.
Bill was born in Dekalb County,
Alabama on June 7, 1921. Bill
served in the U.S. Aircorps during
WWII when, while stationed
at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver,
he met Marcia Purinton. They were married September 24,
1945. She preceded him in death in 2010.
Bill was a salesman and manager for Dixon Paper Company in
Grand Junction for almost 40 years, retiring in 1985. During retirement,
he worked for a food broker and he and Marcia wintered in
Scottsdale, AZ, a time which he always looked forward to.
Bill was an active member of Rotary and the First Congregational
Church of Grand Junction, serving on various committees. Since
Marcia’s death, Bill resided at Mesa View Retirement Community.
While there, he was able to celebrate his military past. In September,
he was a part of the 5th Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. On December
7th, he celebrated Pearl Harbor Day with Veterans attending
a luncheon at Two Rivers Conventions Center and was honored
with Veterans at Mesa View throughout the year.
Bill enjoyed his wonderful family who loved him dearly. He is
survived by two daughters, Kathryn (Ray) Hawthorne of Centennial,
CO; Christine (Tom) Yarbrough of Longmont, CO; one son, Bryan
(Janice) Newman of Grand Junction; seven grandchildren, and 15
great-grandchildren. He will be remembered for his positive outlook
on life and for his great smile. He will be greatly missed by his
many surviving friends, his new friends at Mesa View and his loving
family.
Dad taught us to live life to the fullest under all circumstances.
Thank you, we love you!
