Rex Porter Newkirk, 89, the eighth of 13 children, was born to Lennie Ware Newkirk and Eva Bess Ford on December 20, 1922, in Jacksboro, Texas. He was a Veteran of World War II, serving 17 months in the Philippine Islands with the 1st Calvary Division He was awarded four Bronze Stars; Purple Heart with one Oak Leaf Cluster and one Silver Star. He passed away Sunday, July 23, 2012. Rex answered the call to preach in 1952, pastoring churches in Texas and Colorado for over 30 years. He began going overseas in 1982, preaching in 32 different countries. He was forced to discontinue ministering due to Severe Spinal Stenosis and Parkinson's disease. Rex married Wanda Lou Clemens on December 18, 1945, in Shamrock, TX. She survives with their five children, Diane Moore (Willie, deceased); Donna Lane (Jack); Jim Newkirk (Charlotte); Rex A. Newkirk; Jana Bauman (Mike deceased); twelve grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Lennie Raymond (Neal) of Shamrock, TX, and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at the Orchard Mesa Baptist Church, 2748 B 1/2 Road, Grand Junction, Colorado. A visitation time will be held at 9:00 a.m. prior to service time. Graveside services will be held at 1:15 p.m., Wednesday at the Delta City Cemetery, Delta, Colorado. Pastor Rex Newkirk, 89, Grand Junction, died July 23, 2012, at Hospice Care Center. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. today at Orchard Mesa Baptist Church, followed by services at 10 a.m. Pastor Newkirk was a Baptist minister. Survivors include his wife, Wanda; two sons, Jim and Rex; three daughters, Diane Moore, Donna Lane, Jana Bauman; one sister, Lennie Raymond of Shamrock, Texas; 12 grandchildren, 10 greatgrandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
