Mary 95, died on Thursday May
17, 2012.
Mary was born in Grand Junction
to Charles and Minnie Salatino,
and spent most of her life
here. Her father worked for the
railroad and they did spend some
years in Westwater, Utah. She
graduated from Grand Junction
High School and then went on to
Western State in Gunnison, Colorado to obtain a teaching degree.
Mary married Robert Strain but continued her education, obtaining
her Masters Degree. Mary worked in education for 40 years before
retiring. She not only taught in elementary grade school, but also
was an assistant principal. After retiring, she and her family started a
business in Clifton, which she helped with for many years. They ran
Clifton Lube and Automotive and also had storage units.
She and her husband traveled extensively and saw most of the
United States and much of Europe. They were married 50 years before
he passed away. Mary nursed her husband, mother and sister
through long illnesses. She moved into Mesa View Retirement
Center in 2007. She enjoyed reading. She became involved with the
Literacy Center, here in Grand Junction, and through them she tutored
a Spanish-speaking student at Mesa View. Mary was involved
in many activities, she helped with the Country Store, and did hospital
visits. She faithfully attended the exercise program and could
work out and tell a joke at the same time.
Mary was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic
Church, also a member of the Alter and Rosary Society, Catholic
Daughters, and Retired Teachers. Mary was loving and generous to
all, she will be truly missed by all who loved her.
She is survived by one brother, Sam Salatino, Grand Junction, and
one sister, Betty Salatino, Grand Junction. In addition to her husband
and parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Carolyn
Hacker and Selma Salatino. She has numerous nieces and nephews,
and great-nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held Monday May 21, 2012, from 4 - 6:00 p.m.
at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary, 2515 Patterson. Services will be held
Tuesday May 22, 2012, at 10:00 am., and officiated by Father
Plough at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 790 -26
1/2 Road, Grand Junction Colorado, 81506. Burial will be at Calvary
Cemetery on Orchard Mesa. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions
may be made to Holy Family School and Catholic Outreach.
