Juna Mae Griffith Beachman
was born on November 16, 1917,
on her grandparent's farm near
Stanberry, MO to Lester T. Griffith
and Floy (Lippincott) Griffith
of Palisade, CO. Her ancestors
homesteaded in Kansas and
N e b r a s k a a n d t h e n , i n 1 9 0 6 ,
settled on a fruit orchard on G
Road in Palisade, CO. Juna attended
Mt. Lincoln School and
Grand Junction High School. She
attended college at Colorado State
University in Ft. Collins and
completed nursing training at St.
Mary's in Grand Junction and St
Joseph's Hospital, Denver. Upon
completion of her RN license, she
entered active service in the U.S
Navy Nurses Corps in September
1943.
Juna served her country until the
end of World War II, tending the wounded in several locations, including
Mare Island, CA, several clinics in San Diego, the Navy
hospital ship, U.S.S Benevolence and the Naval Hospital at Pearl
Harbor, Hawaii. While serving at the Naval Hospital in San Diego,
she met and fell in love with a young wounded Marine from Attica
NY. On March 6, 1946, she married Marine Capt. Richard J.
Beachman at the Naval Chapel in San Diego.
Juna Mae and Richard moved to Niagara Falls, NY and then lived
in several cities in New York State as they pursued his career with
the NY State Division of Parole, including Syracuse, Plattsburgh
and Albany. The couple retired to Grand Junction, CO and enjoyed
being with family there. Since 2008, Juna Mae has resided at Balfour
Cherrywood in Louisville. During their 62 years of marriage,
"Dick and Juna" enjoyed raising their six children and taking family
trips from NY to Colorado. She taught her children to love music,
travel, family, adventure and frequent laughter. She especially inspired
her daughters to pursue a satisfying career and her work ethic
was an inspiration to all her children.
Juna Mae is preceded in death by her husband, Richard Beachman;
her brother, Vernon Griffith of Palisade, CO, and her sister, Unabelle
(Masinton). She is survived by her children, Thomas Beachman
(Sue) of Craig, CO; Teresa Huck (Al) of Lyons, CO; Janet
Fishman (Donald) of Oakton VA; Nancy Fabian (Frank) of Virginia
Beach, VA; Barbara Beachman (Patrick Richardson) of Nymboida,
Australia, and John Beachman (Debbie) of Longmont, CO. She is
survived also by her sisters, Rosella (Hart Jorgensen) of Grand
Junction, and Emma Gene (Worthington) of Canon City, CO. She is
also survived by 12 grandchildren and one great-grandson. Her
family is very grateful for the kind and loving care shown to Juna at
Balfour Cherrywood as well as the sensitive attention from the Hospice
Care of Boulder. Donations in her memory can be made to
Hospice Care of Boulder or Alzheimer's Association.
The memorial service will be held at the Veteran’s Memorial Cemetary
on September 24 at 3:00 p.m.
