Phyllis Burrowes, a longtime resident of Oak Creek, passed away Jan. 7, 2012, at the Doak Walker Care Center. She was just two months shy of her 100th birthday.
Phyllis was born March 26, 1912, in Lievin, France, to Leonce and Marie Lambert. She was the youngest of three children and the only girl in her family.
Phyllis married Max Mowery and had three children: Shirley, Joann and Glenn. After Max’s death, she married Robert (Gene) Buntin and had two more children: Betty and Wayne.
Phyllis was an amazing businesswoman, cook, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She supported her family through the years by owning a clothing store, bakery and restaurants in Oak Creek. She also was a cook at The Lowell Whiteman School in Steamboat Springs.
She loved nature, fishing, camping and especially cooking. She loved her animals, including her cows, chickens and turkeys. She loved to dance from a young age. She would walk up the train tracks from Moffat Circle to Oak Creek just to attend dances in town.
She made fabulous pies and always stopped everything to make cinnamon rolls for her favorite grandkids.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Leo and Joe Lambert; husbands Max Mowery, Gene Buntin and Bernard Burrowes; her daughter Shirley Alvarez; sons-in-law Richard Borroel, James Canaday and Ernie Lombardi; daughter-in-law Dixie Mowery; granddaughter Shirley Ann Alvarez; grandson Ben Borroel; and great-grandson Nicholas Lombardi.
Phyllis is survived by four children, Joann Lombardi and Wayne Buntin (Janice), of Oak Creek, Glenn Mowery, of Orleans, Neb., and Betty Deane, of Grand Junction; 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, Phyllis requested contributions be made to the Oak Creek Historical Society, P.O. Box 1, Oak Creek, CO 80467, or to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 3000 Elk River Road #3, Steamboat Springs, CO 80487.
A celebration of Phyllis’ life was Jan. 14, 2012. Interment followed at Oak Creek Cemetery.
Je t’ai aime de tout mon coeur, toute ma vie. Grannie Bear.
