Alton Jack “Al” Sibley Sr. passed away Friday at Cranbrook Assisted Living in Greenwood Village. He was 89 years old.
Al was born to Paul and Nellie Sibley in Denver on May 3, 1923, the fourth of six children. He attended schools in the Denver area and graduated from Denver South High School. Al joined the Army and served as an electrician in World War II in Europe. Upon his return to the states in 1944, he married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Jeane Farmer. Together they raised their two sons and a daughter in their home that Al built in south Denver. Al worked as a plumber for Cook Mechanical, following in the footsteps of his father and what would later be known as a family legacy. Al was proficient at his craft and took great pride in his work laying the groundwork for sons, nephews, cousins and grandson to carry on the tradition.
After the children were on their own, Al and Jeane enjoyed living in Craig as well as Summit County, when he eventually went to work for his nephew Jerry Sibley in Eagle County, commuting each day for work. Jeane passed away in 1985 and Al continued to work and live in the mountains until his retirement in 1991. He maintained a residence in Summit County but eventually moved back to Denver in 1994. It was there that he met his dearest companion of 25 years, Mary Lou Culpepper, with whom he enjoyed his retirement and a life of love, laughter, family and friends. She survives him today. Al was a hunter, fisherman, skier, scout master, and in recent years, he loved to have the world at this fingertips with the computer. He was a member of the Hope United Methodist Church in Greenwood Village and a longtime member of the Masonic Lodge.
Al is preceded in death by his wife, Jeane; brothers Thurston and Ray; and sisters Faye Sibley Kintz and Pauline Sibley Greene Jenni.
Al is survived by his companion Mary Lou; his sons, Jack (Cynthia) Sibley, of Eagle and Jeff Sibley, of Gypsum; daughter Linda (Bill) Barnett, of Tonapah, Ariz.; brother Norman Sibley, of Seattle; grandchildren Josh and Rachel Sibley, of Eagle and Jordan Sibley (Mike) Evans, of Colorado Springs; great-granddaughter Jenna Evans; sister-in-law Geraldine Farmer Wolf, of Lakewood; and many nieces and nephews, including Eagle County residents Jerry and Judy Sibley, Suszanne and Wolfgang Mueller, Kristena and Kelli Wyatt, and Jessica Gutherie. He also counted Mary Lou's family as his own.
Funeral service and interment will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Olinger Chapel Hills Mortuary and Cemetery, 6601 S. Colorado Blvd. in Denver. There will be a reception to follow, announced at the service. In lieu of flowers, Al would have wanted to encourage us to spend time with loved ones and get out to enjoy the great outdoors.
