Mildred “Mike” Louise (Shiflett) Toomer, 87, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 22. She passed away at Cross Roads Assisted Living in Rifle.

She was born Feb. 17, 1925, in Richmond, Va., to Pendleton and Mary Louise (Bowles) Shiflett. She grew up in Virginia and graduated from Farmville State Teachers College. She taught first and second grade in Portsmouth, Va.

On June 30, 1951, Mike married Livingston “Wiss” Kennedy Toomer. In 1954 they moved to Burns, Colo., to a cow camp on the Benton Ranch, high in the mountains. They raised their three sons, Jim, Bob and Tom, on the ranch. Mike taught in the one-room schoolhouse in Burns, then taught in Eagle, commuting to the ranch on weekends. In 1993, when the ranch sold, they moved to Gypsum. She retired after teaching for 20 years in Colorado.

In 2010, Mike moved to Cross Roads Assisted living. She thoroughly enjoyed her time there and greatly appreciated their loving care.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wiss; her three brothers, Bobby, Pendleton and Thomas; and her sister, “Shippy.”

She leaves behind her three sons, James (Kathy), Robert (Penny) and Tom (Linda); 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Eagle Baptist Church on Tuesday, Jan. 29. Interment was at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Gypsum.

Mildred L. TOOMER, 87, passed away Tuesday [Jan. 22] at Crossroads Assisted Living in Rifle.
Mildred was born Feb. 17, 1925, to Pendleton and Mary (Bowles) SHIFLETT. She married Livingston "Wis" TOOMER.
Services are planned for Jan. 29 at 1 p.m. at the Eagle Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Crossroads Assisted Living in Rifle, or Hospice of the Valley in Basalt.
