John Howard Davis, age 75, of
Olathe, passed away May 30,
2012, at his home.
John was born October 5, 1936,
to Lloyd Ernest and Sara Margaret
(Morris) Davis in Norwood,
CO. He spent his childhood in
Norwood and graduated from
Norwood High School in 1954.
As a teenager he worked in the
Locker for his father and on the Horace Joseph Ranch. John began
his 35 year life career with the Colorado State Highway Department
as a summer hire-on in Norwood, CO. During his career he lived in
Eagle, Gunnison, and Montrose, finally settling in Olathe. He taught
his children many things, including good work ethic, hunting, fishing,
camping, gardening, digging post holes etc. He would butcher
deer and elk for friends (with his kid's help), on the barter system…
he would get a quarter of the meat for butchering, so the family always
had good meat for the table. Later he started raising chickens,
turkeys, rabbits, pigs and cattle, so his family was well fed.
He participated in Boy Scout 50 mile hikes with his sons, was active
in the local Rod and Gun Club where everyone learned good
shooting skills. He would take the family out to cut a Christmas tree,
and everyone would eat c-rations for lunch. (Per John's children)
"He would take us kids hunting for rabbits, and when we were ready
to head back, he would pick a kid and ask him to lead the way back
to the truck. We were usually successful because he taught us to
watch our back trail. It served two purposes… first to let us see what
the trail back to the truck looked like, and second mule deer will
sometimes get out of their bed and circle around behind you to return
to their beds." John shot competitive pistol, taught hunter
safety, was a member of Montrose Elk's #1053 for many years, and
in later years became a member and Past Master of several Masonic
Lodges, Norwood #111, Telluride #56, Delta #62, Olathe #157, and
was a member of Black Hawk #11. He had the opportunity to announce
rodeos several years. John helped many people over his life,
was known for his quick wit, and sense of humor even in failing
health.
John was previously married to Linda Marie Swartz and of this
union were four children. John later married Linda Joyce Scott from
Cedaredge, CO. John was a devoted and loving husband, father,
doting grandfather, and recently great-grandfather. John is survived
by his wife, Linda J.; sons, Larry (Nancy); Kirk (Winnie); Scott, and
daughter, Charlotte-Char (Michael); grandchildren, Alissa, Sienna,
Adam, and Emma, and great-grandson, William James; brother,
Wayne and sister, Norma. John was preceded in death by his parents,
and step-sister, Susie Seevers.
A public visitation will be held on Monday, June 4, 2012, from 4 to
5:00 p.m. at Crippin Funeral Home Chapel. A Graveside Service
with Masonic Honor will be held on Tuesday, June 5, 2012, at 1:30
p.m. at the Norwood Cemetery, in Norwood, Colorado.
