Longtime Paonia , Colorado resident, Ellen J. Smith, passed away
on Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at Delta County Memorial Hospital
in Delta, Colorado. She was 75 years of age.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 6,
2012, at the City Park in Paonia, Colorado.
Ellen Jean Hansen was born on July 2, 1936, to Eugene and
Eleanor Hansen in Gunnison, Colorado. She spent her childhood in
Bowie and Grand Junction, Colorado. She graduated from Grand
Junction High School in 1954. After graduation, she furthered her
education at Mesa College and Western State College where she received
her Master's Degree in Special Education.
Ellen married Harold E. Smith on August 18, 1958, in Grand Junction,
Colorado. They have been residents of Paonia, Colorado for 54
years.
Ellen was very active in her community and volunteered for many
organizations. She also was an excellent cook and loved cooking for
family and friends. Ellen was a teacher in the Paonia School system
for 30 years.
Ellen was a member of many clubs and organizations including the
following: Ute Trails Car Club, serving as Secretary/Treasurer;
Western Slope Antique Engine Club; and the Garden Club. She
helped organize the BMW Rally and the Colorado Grand Car Tour
and was a caretaker at the Paonia Teen Center.
Ellen is survived by her husband, Harold Smith; son, Ken Smith
and spouse, Betsy, and daughter, Danita Green and spouse, Darrell,
all of Paonia, Colorado; a brother, Dr. Dan Hansen of Denver, Colorado;
six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Eleanor
Francis and a sister, Anita Ritenour.
The family suggests contributions in Ellen's memory to be made to
the Delta County Federal Credit Union c/o Ellen Smith Memorial
scholarship fund.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral
Service and Crematory.
