Colorado native, Ruth Wells
Dyer, passed away June 3, 2012,
with her family by her side.
Ruth was born November 20,
1921, to Minnie May Wells and
Charles Chauncey Cheney in a
farmhouse on Morrisania Mesa
above Grand Valley, CO. When
she was born they called her
"Beauty". Her family moved to
Grand Junction when she was about two years old. Ruth grew up
near Second and Chipeta and had many fond memories from her
time there. As a young girl she was told if she kissed her elbow she
would turn into a boy and she about broke her arm trying to do so.
Ruth attended Hawthorne Elementary, Grand Junction Junior High
and graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1940. She attended
one year at Mesa Junior College before marrying John Dyer
on June 9, 1941.
Soon after marrying, John and Ruth headed to California where
they would start their family. Their first child, Douglas, was born in
1942, and daughter, Linda, followed in 1943. When John entered the
service Ruth and her two children moved back to Grand Junction to
be near her family. Their daughter, Roberta, was born in 1946. John
worked out of town most of their married life leaving Ruth to raise
their children. When the kids went off to school she went to work,
first at The Daily Sentinel as a teletype operator, then the Atomic
Energy Commission and the Social Security Administration before
retiring in 1983. She belonged to Altrusa the national club for business
and professional women. n 1987, daughter Roberta died of
lung cancer and Ruth took in and raised her two grandsons, Bill and
T.J. Young. She was blessed with seven grandsons and 12
great-grandchildren. She loved to garden and enjoyed watching old
westerns and sports. If there was a baseball game or tennis match on
television you can bet she was watching. Ruth dedicated her life to
hard work and her family who miss her terribly.
Ruth is survived by son, Douglas Dyer; daughter, Linda Simpson;
grandsons, Mike Simpson (Tonia); Will Simpson; Bill Young;
Aaron Dyer (Anne); Tony Simpson, and T.J. Young (Michelle); 11
great-grandchildren; nieces, Laurie Ruth Tebeest, Anna Jean Feldman,
and Jodi Harper;, and nephews, Bob Carter and Mike Harper.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, John; daughter, Roberta
Kay Young; grandson, Todd Simpson, and great-grandson, Alexander
Simpson.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. June 7, 2012, at Orchard
Mesa Cemetery.
