Hugh C. Young Buried In Minturn

Hugh C. Young was born at Crystal Lakes, Colo. January 11, 1887 and died in St. Joseph's Hospital in Denver Aug. 4, 1956 following a brief illness. When he was a child his parents moved to Leadville, where he grew to manhood and where he entered employment with the Colorado and Southern Railway and COlorado Midland Railway, until 1917 when he moved to Minturn where he was employed as a locomotive fireman and later as a locomotive engineer for the D&RGW Railway, which position he held until his retirement on January 1, 1954.

On May 14, 1903 he was united in marriage to Nellie McNichols in Leadville and to this union were born a son Phillip, who died in infancy; a daughter, Anna who died in 1941 and a daughter, Loretta Guy, who resides in Minturn.

Mr. Young was active in civic and county affairs and was coroner of Eagle County from 1931 to 1939. He served a number of years as under sheriff of Eagle County and was a member of the Minturn School Board. During his terms on this board, the new grade and high school building were erected in Minturn, and much credit for this accomplishment was due to Mr. Young. He was also a member of the B of LF and E, and the IOOF.

Funeral services were held from St. Patrick's Church in Minturn August 8 with Father Joseph Leberer officiating. Burial was in the family plot in River View Cemetery at Minturn.

Pallbearers were Charles Borgeson, John Brandy, James Smalich, Dave Williams, B.H. McBreen and Thomas McBreen.

In addition to his wife, Nellie and daughter, Loretta, he is survived by one grandson and two granddaughters and a host of nieces and nephews.

Uncle Hughie, as he was affectionately known by his many friends, will be sadly missed in the community.
