Youth Fatally Shot While Hunting
HOWARD CANTRELL KILLED ON SALT CREEK BY BULLET FROM COMPANIONS GUN—FIRED ACCIDENTLY . Howard Leroy Cantrell , nineteen year old son of Howard O . Cantrell of Snowmass , died at the Tyler hospital in Eagle at 10:30 o clock Monday night as a result of a gunshot wound received earlier in the evening. Howard had been staying at the home of his brother-in-law , Edward Watson , on Salt Creek for some time . Mr . Watson had spent the day working on the Brush creek road , and the two men had finished the evening chores , and gone up along the hill above the house to look after some irrigating water before dinner . They took their guns with them , and just before dark shot at a deer . They thought they had scored a hit and the younger man moved off to follow the animal. Mr . Watson was carrying his rifle and irrigating shovel in the same hand and, while trying to stick the shovel into the ground , the gun exploded . The ball struck Cantrell some twenty yards distant , in the left hip , splintering the bone and passing into the abdomen. The rifle, a twenty-two high power was loaded with soft nose and hollow point bullets , either of which , upon penetrating the abdomen , would cause a fatal wound . Cantrell was rushed to Dr . Tyler s hospital and died of internal hemorrhage Howard O. Cantrell , father of the deceased boy , together with his wife and three children , arrived here from Snowmass Tuesday morning to make arrangements for disposition of the body . The body was taken to Glenwood Springs where funeral services and burial were held at 2:00 o clock Thursday afternoon .
