Roy Harry Struble Jr. was born Oct. 28, 1921, in Quincy, Ill., to Roy H. and Mildred L. Struble. He was raised in Galesburg, Ill., and graduated from Knox College of Galesburg in 1943.
Roy always said some of his happiest childhood memories were the many long boyhood summers when he and his dog would arrive alone by train in Salina, Kan., to stay on his grandfather’s dairy farm, where he had his own horse and cow.
Roy served with the medics of the 102nd Infantry Division during World War II in Europe.
He married Beverly Bristol in Denver in 1946. To this union, their four children were born, Shelley, Stacey, Ken and Shari. Roy and Bev operated a Gambles hardware store in Wheatland, Wyo., from 1946 to 1949. They bought the Steamboat Springs Gambles Store in February 1949. Beverly preceded him in death in December 1985. Roy retired in August 1988.
He was a beloved husband and father and a world traveler. Hobbies during his younger years included square dancing, bowling and fishing. Later in life, cruising became his passion. He loved the motion of the ship and sitting on the deck just watching the ocean.
He was active in the Masonic Lodge. He served as Past Master of Blue Lodge, Past High Priest of Royal Arch Masons, Past Commander of Knights Templar, 32 degree Mason member of Scottish Rite Masons, and a Member of Shrine. He also played clarinet in the Shrine Band of Korein Temple.
Roy married Marie E. Bristol, of Loveland, in March 1988. They enjoyed cruising to all parts of the world. Marie preceded him in death in February 2012.
He enjoyed taking long morning walks on the Yampa River Core Trail with his beloved boxer dogs for many years.
He is survived by his son, Ken Struble, and his wife, Becky, of Jackson, Wyo.; three daughters, Shelley Orrell and husband, John, of Steamboat Springs, Stacey Swinehart and husband, Doug, of Taos, N.M., and Shari Jones and husband, Larry, of Bellingham, Wash. He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
