Dean Redmond was born Jan. 14, 1926, in Yampa and died Nov. 28, 2012, surrounded by his family at Hospice of Grand Junction.
Dean was the youngest of four children born to Elizabeth and James Redmond, and he grew up on their ranch just west of Yampa at the base of the Little Flat Tops. He attended grade school at Heart Mountain School, which was several miles from the Redmond ranch, skiing uphill both ways. He graduated from Yampa Union High School in 1943.
Dean signed up for the Merchant Marines after turning 18 and spent the next two years seeing extraordinary action on an unarmed ship in the Pacific theatre. Upon returning home to Yampa, he returned to ranching.
In 1952, he was introduced to Roberta Wilson, a registered nurse at Routt Memorial Hospital in Steamboat. They were married in September 1953 and spent four blissfully happy months together before Dean was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.
Eventually, they settled on the family ranch, where Dean and Roberta ranched and raised their six kids. Dean also worked for many years as a carpenter at Steamboat Ski Area, Keystone and other places on the Western Slope.
Dean was a humble, gentle, loving and generous-to-a-fault man who loved life on his ranch. He spent many hours creating, repairing, building and enjoying all of his hobbies even after retiring to Grand Junction 14 years ago. He loved to tell stories about all of the old-timers in Routt County and passed on an entertaining history of the area replete with humor.
His greatest love, however, was for his family and the love of his life, his wife of 59 years, Roberta.
He is survived by his wife, Roberta, of Grand Junction; his brother Jack (Wanda) Redmond, of Yampa; his sister, Patsy Redmond, of Denver; his sons Doug (Beth), of Durango, Tim (Darlene), of Durango, Bob, of Grand Junction, and Dan (Susan), of Fruita; his daughters Anne (Scott) Godfrey, of Fruita, and Mary (Mike) Gomez, of Arvada; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Bill Redmond.
Dean was laid to rest Dec. 4 at Yampa Cemetery. A memorial service was at 1 p.m. Dec. 14 at New Life Church, 1350 N. Seventh St. in Grand Junction.
We will miss him more than any words can express but know we will all be together again in heaven.
