Jesse Gordon Whittaker

Jesse Gordon Whittaker was born February 15, 1904 in Princeton, Kansas, the son of Albert Von and Mary Alice Whittaker. He had one sister, Mary Alice.

The family moved to Genoa, Colorado when Mr. Whittaker was 16 years old, and he graduated from high school in Hugo, Colorado.

He spent a short time in Wyoming and in North Park, near Walden, Co. before moving to Eagle in Novemgber, 1924. Here he began is lifetime career of farming and ranching about eight miles from Eagle on Bruce Creek.

Jesse Gordon Whittaker and LaVeta Irene Randall were united in marriage on October 14, 1928. Born to this union were five children: William Von, Mary Ann, Jack Gordon, Jo Ann and Jerry Evan.

In 1936, he bought another ranch on Brush Creek so the family could be near a school. In 1947, the Brush Creek ranch was sold and the family moved back to the "old home ranch" on Bruce Creek.

Mr. Whittaker continued his cattle and sheep operation until his retirement. He was involved in several organizations connected with livestock and agriculture.He was a past president of the Eagle County Woolgrowers Association and remained active in the state and county organizations until his retirement.

He was one of the original members and secretary of the Eagle County Tax Payers Association, which was instrumental in getting the county courthouse built in Eagle.

He was active i n the Masonic Lodge and a Past Master of Castle Lodge No. 122, A.F. and A.M. at Eagle; and he was also a Life Member in good standing in the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Valley of Grand Junction, Orient of Colorado.

Mr. Whittaker died on January 25, 1981 in Yuma, Arizona, where he and LaVeta had spent the winters since retirement.

He is survived by his wife, his sister, Mary Alice Liggett; three sons, Bill, Jack and Jerry; two daughters, Mary Ann and JoAnn; three daughters-in-law, Fran, Rosy and Candy Whittaker; and two sons-in-law, Joe Carter and Dewaine Potter; also 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson.

Memorial services for Gordon Whittaker will be held at the Masonic Temple in Eagle, January 31 at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Cancer Research Fund that has been set up at the First Bank of Eagle County,
