Leonard W.D. Campbell, age 86, of Montrose, passed away May 5,
2012 of natural causes. Leonard was born May 26, 1925 to Jess and
Ruby (Forsbeck) Campbell in Salida, Co. He spent his childhood
and received his education in Norwood, Co. He At the age of 18,
Leonard enlisted in the United States Navy in July 1943 and was
honorably discharged in 1945 as a Lieutenant JG, during WWII, and
the Pacific theater and Korean Conflict. He also served many years
in the U.S. Navy Reserves.
He then went on to college at Long Beach City College, and then
to Denver, Co., to the Denver University before graduating from the
University of San Francisco College of Law with a B.A; and J.D.
He had married Meredyth Campbell Dickerson of Montrose, but divorced.
Leonard had resided in Ogden, Ut, San Francisco and Denver,
Co., before moving to Montrose where he served as attorney for
many years and made his home until his time of death. He served
He was a member of the California Bar Association, Colorado Bar
Association, N.R.A., and S.P.C.A. Leonard was appointed and
served as Regional Counsel for the Environmental Protection
Agency and the United States Justice Department in Denver, Co.
from 1966 to 1974. He was an accomplished attorney, an erudite
man of strong views, who had a soft heart for all animal, especially
dogs and horses.
Surviving family members include his daughter, Sherry Campbell
Breuer of Cedaredge, Co; Leonard's wonderful friend, Donna Jean
Campbell; also his caretaker in the last two years, Robin Breuer
Mendez; brother Paul (Kathleen) Campbell of Salida, Co; sisters,
Marcine Williams of Grand Junction, Co., Katherine (Dan) Greenlee
of San Jose, Ca., Donna (Bill) Cording of Grand Junction, Co.,
Shirley (Tom) Lines of Grand Junction, Co; one grandson Colin
Breuer of Telluride, Co. Leonard was preceded in death by his
brothers Neal Campbell and Walter McWilliams, sisters Lois Albeyta,
Rosalie Closser and Dorothy Moore. Memorial contributions
may be made to S.P.C.A., or animal charity of your choice. A graveside
service with Military Honors and flag presentation will be held
on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at 1:30 P.M. at the Gazebo at Grand
View Cemetery, west of Montrose.
