Mrs. Elizabeth Wilds
by Rev. C.R. Ramms

Mrs. Elizabeth Wilds, nee Grusmeyer, was born June 26, 1877 at Logansport, Ind. Her pious Catholic parents soon placed her in covenant relationship with our Triume (sic) Bod through the sacred rite of baptiswm and indue time reared her the fear and admonition of the Lord through their own exemplary life and by encouraging Elizabeth and the other children to attend church services regularly. "Her parents were poor, but good christian people," said one of our pioneers, who came from her very neighborhood, "and I remember well seeing her and her sister already as little tots going to early church services every Sunday morning."

Under this environment she also received her secular education.

October 8, 1895, she was married to Mr. Isaac WIlds at Logansport. This union was blessed with two children, a daughter Mrs. Anna Sedan of Logansport, Ind. and a son, Edward, who graduated from out Gypsum high school last spring. DUring June, 1926, the family came to Gypsum valley and since then has established itself in the wholesome development of our community life, industry and thrift which shall always characterize the winning of the West. Through over a period of many years Mrs. Wilds was seriously and most painfully afflicted with a malignant ailment, that gradually absorbed her every ounce of strength, yea, her very life, yet her dominant will enabled her until recent weeks to assist with the household duties and to care for her family. When others would have thought only of self and personal relief, she illustrated service. And when our sympathies for her distress were already beyond expression we shall never forget her satisfaction in referring to the large batch of bread she was still privileged to make for her dearest one. However, she was also courteous and kind, generous in thot and deed and most sensitive to the finest considerations. For instance, in her regard for the religious convictions of others and the comforting services of the Protestant ministry. For although she never renounced her Catholic faith, but always cherished the emblem of the crucifix at the head of her bed, yet she welcomed as she respected our pastoral calls, our prayers and meditations, scriptural readings and gospel hymns, awiting them as regularly as the return of the Sabbath.

A kind and sympatheict Providence opened ajar the portals to an abundant life for her last Thursday morning, June 28 as a birthday anniversary present leaving her faithful, most devoted and untiring husband, her tow children, three stepchildren -- Lowell A. WIlds of Gypsum; Samuel E. Wilds, of RIchmond, Va.; Mrs. Violet Bruner of Richmond, Va.; her three brothers and sisters, besides a host of many friends behind to cherish her memories and to rejoice in her redemption.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the Lutheran church in Gypsum, attended by a large concourse of neighbors and friends. Rev. C.R. Ramme, pastor of the church, ahd charge of the services. THe remains were laid to rest in Cedar Hill cemtery in Gypsum.
