Alice Miles Lewis passed away peacefully at Yampa Valley Medical Center on Oct. 14, 2012, surrounded by her family. She was born Alice Louise Miles in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1932. The family moved to Darien, Conn., in 1942. After high school, she attended Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and graduated in 1954 with degrees in business and economics. She moved to New York City to work as the first female public relations account manager for Young & Rubicam, an advertising agency. After a period of time, she moved to Mount Snow, Vt., to work in management, ski instructing and as a jack of all trades. In early spring, Alice and friends vacationed westward stopping at Timberline Lodge in Mount Hood, Ore., where she was offered and later accepted a job as head of advertising. It was here that she met her husband-to-be, Ronald G. Lewis., who was a medical student at the time.
Ron and Alice were married in March 1960 and, after Ron’s internship, moved to Germany with the Air Force. She was active in the Women’s League and charities of the 36th Air Wing and the 22nd Tactical Fighter Squadron. Leaving the military later, the family moved to Steamboat in 1972.
Alice served on several committees, but her happiest times were with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club. She was a board member, an FIS ski official and enjoyed traveling with Ron with the U.S. Women’s World Cup Ski Team. She was an avid tennis player, loved to travel and always was energetic and enthusiastic. She was the backbone as the family grew and never complained about the long hours she spent alone while Ron worked at an orthopedics medical practice. She was the force behind the growth and formation of her children’s emotional, educational and professional futures.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Ronald Lewis; son, Calin Miles Lewis, and wife, Jules Lewis, of Abu Dhabi, UAE; granddaughter, Taylor Amuri Lewis, of New Zealand; daughter, Erin Tonry Newlin and husband, Philippe; and grandchildren, Harrison and Jackie Newlin.
If you wish to honor Alice, she would want you to choose the charity of your choice. Her favorites were the Winter Sports Club, Yampa River Botanic Park, Steamboat Springs Animal Shelter and the Denver Zoo.

“Grieve not, nor speak of me with tears, but laugh and talk of me as if I were beside you. I’ve loved you so ... ’twas Heaven here with you.” — Isla Paschal Richardson
