Leroy “Pete” Herrera, 1982-2013.
Leroy “Pete” Herrera, 31, of Colorado Springs, formerly of Leadville, passed away at his home on Thursday. He was born on Jan. 6, 1982, in Leadville to Dan Leroy and Josephine (Martinez) Herrera. He married Crystal (Jaramillo) Herrera in November 2011 in Colorado Springs.
Pete completed his junior year of high school at Lake County High School and later received his GED at Colorado Mountain College. He worked as a ski technician, cook and in engineering, however he was a “Jack of all trades”. If something was broken, he could fix it, just like “Grandpa Joe.” He was a member of the Original Poop Decks (a skateboard company), and going to church and helping the homeless were special to him. Pete was a person who had many friends in all walks of life. He always put his heart and soul into everything he did. He enjoyed skateboarding, snowboarding, camping, “chef-ing it up” (cooking) and four-wheeling. He loved being with family and friends and was always the light and laughter of the party, where there was never a dull moment with him around.
Pete is survived by his wife, Crystal Herrera; children Jada, Dominick and Angelica Herrera and Jeremiah Gonzales; sister Angela Herrera; sister-in-law Yolanda LaCome; nieces Jessica Blas and Jaylene Medina; nephews Gabriel Herrera and Diego Medina; aunts and uncles Josie Martinez and Ronnie Lovato and Nazario and Rosira Herrera; grandparents-in-law Joe and Lucy Jaramillo; and many other aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents Joe and Lucy Herrera, uncle Fidel Duran and cousin Johnny Herrera.
A visitation will be held from 6-7 p.m. today at Annunciation Catholic Church in Leadville with a rosary service to follow at 7 p.m. with Deacon Tony Werckman officiating. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Annunciation Catholic Church with The Rev. Father Jesse Perez as celebrant. A reception will follow the Mass at Leadville Elk’s Lodge No. 236. Burial will be private. Bailey-Kent Funeral Home of Leadville is assisting the family with arrangements.
