Edwin “Ed” J. Rother
August 8, 1926 – January 27, 2013
Edwin J. Rother went to be with
his loving family and Lord in
heaven. He passed away at the
VA Hospice Center on Sunday
morning. He was 86.
Ed was born to Thelma and
Paully Rother in Tarkio, MO, as
an only child. He loved growing
up mid-western style on the Missouri
river in St. Joseph.
At the age of 17, World War II begged his presence and there was
no doubt it was going to be carried out in the United States Ma rine
Corp. The beloved Corp was something Ed took great pride in, an d
it was his opportunity to serve the country that he loved.
After serving four years with the 1st Marine Division Platoon 487,
mostly on Bougainvillea Island, he came to the port of Los Ange les
and married Joyce Dutton. He worked for the City of Los Angeles in
the capacity of street maintenance. When growth of the big city became
overwhelming Ed packed up his three boys, Thomas Rother of
Fruita; Jim Rother of Grand Junction, and Ernie Rother of Grand
Junction and his wife and headed for Casper, WY, for one of the
biggest adventures he had ever embarked on. Aside from catching
an occasional fish, he loved raising his family and playing cow boy
and rancher until his career with the Bureau of Reclamation, “J ob
Corp” took him to Yuma, AZ for a short 16 months. Ed then trans -
ferred to the Collbran Job Corp as a Corpman supervisor until h is
retirement in 1993.
Most that knew him would say he had a heart of gold. He was a
kind, compassionate, caring individual while carrying on his ability
to be a people person.
His wife of 64 years, Joyce, passed away on October 26, 2012. He
is also preceded in death by a son, John Earl Rother in 1953 at the
age of 18 months, and his father and mother.
Ed’s relationship with his two grandchildren, Chris and Melis sa
Rother, both of Clifton and his four great-grandchildren was on e of
his great enjoyments.
Ed will be laid to rest at the VA Cemetery in Grand Junction on
February 6, 2013, with full military honors and attended by his family
only.
Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice and Palliative
Care of Western Colorado.
Arrangements are under the direction of Martin Mortuary.
