Omar HOWLAND, resident of Eagle County for 51 years, died in the Glenwood Springs hospital on February 18, 1962, following an illness of several months.
He was born at Winchester, Ohio, January 27, 1886, and came to Eagle in August 1909. He worked for many years on the Sherman Brothers ranch east of Eagle, now owned by Carl LLOYD of Chicago.
An ardent sports fan, Mr. HOWLAND played with the Eagle baseball when the community had the best team in its history, from 1912 to 1918.
When he quit farming, Omar entered the employ of the New Jersey Zinc Co. at Gilman, then was later appointed custodian of the Eagle County Courthouse and a deputy under the late Sheriff W. M. WILSON. When Mr. WILSON retired in 1959, Mr. HOWLAND retired with him. Since then, his health kept him from the active life to which he was accustomed.
He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Al (Betty) REICH of 1718 North 11th, Boise, Idaho and two grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Cora THORPE of Ventura and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held in Eagle February 21 by Reverend C. H. MOORHEAD at the Methodist Church. Interment, directed by the Miller Mortuary of Eagle, was in Sunset View Cemetery. Pall bearers were Lewis COWDEN, Herman STEIN, Walt LIEBER, Eldon and Willard WILSON and Wayne RANDALL.
