Eugene Capps Vories passed

2013, at age 90.
He was born January 19, 1923,
in Walsenburg, Colorado, the son
of Eugene Stark Vories and Ruby
L e o n C a p p s V o r i e s . G e n e ' s
grandparents homesteaded in
Colorado before it became a state.
Gene grew up riding horses and
helping out his uncles on the family cattle ranch near Pryor, C olorado
and loved working with the cowboys he met there. His dream
was to have a ranch of his own someday. During high school his
family moved to Grand Junction and he worked as a janitor and
lived in the basement of First Baptist Church. At this church h e met
and later married his bride, Eunice Marks on September 20, 1942 .
He was drafted into the Army in 1943, and served as a combat ve teran
of World War II in the European theatre. He achieved the r ank
of Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1946. After t he
war he worked as a ranch manager at the Columbia Ranch in Ft .
Garland and later at the Lasater Ranch in Limon, Colorado. He
moved to Colorado Springs and eventually started his own business,
Vories Control Co., making contacts in the plumbing and heating
business. Later he became the branch manager of the Pueblo branch
of Southwestern Supply Co. and then was transferred to run the
Grand Junction branch. Later he put together investors to buy o ut
the Grand Junction branch and started Top Line Supply Company
which he ran for 25 years.
His dream was realized when he bought a ranch on Glade Park i n
1970 where he rode horses and ran Beefmaster cattle for 18 year s.
He then retired and moved to La Veta, Colorado where he could b e
close to the old family ranch he so loved. He was known for his
western fiction novels and has published 17. He was a past Dist rict
Governor of Rotary International and received the Paul Harris F ellow
award in 1980. He was a saddle maker and made saddles,
bridles, belts, chaps, wallets, and other items for many family members.
He was a member of the Pikes Peak Range Riders and made
several horseback trips with them, some in his 80's.
He is preceded in death by his wife in 1996 and his oldest da ughter,
Rebecca Ann Vories, in 1997. He is survived by his sister, Lula
Amelia Vories Benson of Canon City, CO, and his four living chi ldren,
Kimery (Dawn) Vories of Wentzville, MO; Nancy (Bob) Uhl
of Grand Junction, CO; Carol (Waylon) Ferguson of Albuquerque,
NM, and Dan (Nancy) Vories of Carbondale, CO; as well as ten
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
His funeral will be held on Monday, February 11th at 10:00 a.m. at
First Baptist Church of Grand Junction, 7th and Grand. Burial w ill
follow at Orchard Mesa Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be

Eugene C. Vories, 90, Grand Junction, died Feb. 1, 2013, at Eagle
Ridge of Grand Valley.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church. Burial
will follow at Orchard Mesa Cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, Kimery of Wentzville, Mo., and Dan
of Carbondale; two daughters, Nancy Uhl of Grand Junction and
Carol Ferguson of Albuquerque, N.M.; one sister, Lula Benson of
Canon City; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
