The family of Marv Shrum praises the Lord for His grace and
goodness to us. Marv is now sitting in Jesus’ presence, basking in
His glory.
Marv was born January 29, 1928, in Cordell, OK to James and F aradie
Shrum. The family moved to the Grand Junction area in 1934.
Marv siblings are Ruby Kenney of Hansen, ID, Juanita Hefley of
Anchorage, AK, and Kenny Shrum of Craig, CO.
He joined the Navy in 1945, assigned as a Boiler Technician
aboard the USS Ajax (R-6), San Diego, CA. He repaired the German
and Japanese war ships that later were sunk by the testing of the
atom bomb in 1947. Marv married Ida L. McKay in 1948 in Palisade,
CO. They moved to Rangely, CO where he worked on the oil
rigs and Chevron refinery. In 1956, he returned to the Grand Va lley
to work at Gilsonite Refinery. He later purchased and operated several
Standard and Phillips service stations. Marv then started up
Shrum’s Automotive and later partnered with Ed Swim in this ven -
ture. They were known for their good service and honesty.
In 1984, Marv became custodian at Messiah Lutheran Church and
School. There, he became a Deacon and Elder. He loved the facul ty
and children and they in return loved him. He retired in 1998.
Marv’s greatest loves were for his Lord, church family, and o wn
family. Though his mind and eyes grew dim in his last years, the y
always lit up with the mention of going to church. Marv was an avid
fisher, hunter, and especially golfer, where he formed many las ting
friendships.
He is survived by his wife, Ida; son, Daryl, both of Grand Junction;
son, Kirk (Edwina Tang) of San Francisco, CA; granddaughters,
Korin (John Jr.) Bullen of Baltimore, MD; Jessie of Fargo, ND;
Nichole (Josh) Moorer, and their son, Kaleb, all of Lafayette, LA;
grandson, Kory Shrum, and his son, Braylon, both of Savannah, GA.
Marv’s life will be celebrated at the Messiah Lutheran Church on
February 8, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. Graveside services to take place later
that day at 3:00 p.m. at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Grand Junction.
