Philip N. Trusheim, 88, Grand Junction, died Feb. 3, 2013, at
Mantey Heights Rehabilitation and Care Center.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 12, at Martin Mortuary. Services
will be at 11 a.m. Feb. 13 at Martin Mortuary. Interment will follow
at 1 p.m. at Veterens Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado.
Mr. Trusheim co-owned and operated Home Appliance Service
with his wife.
Survivors include three daughters, Marie Adkison of Denver,
Katherine Hunt of Grand Junction and Patricia Pauley of Cape
Girardeau, Mo.; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Philip Norman Trusheim was
born September 5, 1924, to Earl
Trusheim and Anna Mills Parsons
in Huntington Beach, California.
Philip formerly owned Home
Appliance Center for many years.
Philip joined the U.S. Navy at
age 17 in 1941. After basic traini
n g , h e w a s s t a t i o n e d a t t h e
United States Naval Base in Kaneohe Bay, Honolulu. Shortly upon
arrival, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor.
After surviving Pearl Harbor, Philip was deployed to U.S.S. Guadalcanal
Task Group 22.3 on the destroyer U.S.S. Pillsbury. Duri ng
this assignment, the Task Force was assigned to try to capture a
German Submarine. On June 4, 1944, the enemy sub, the U-505,
was discovered and Philip maneuvered the whale boat to the sink -
ing Submarine. Philip was one of the twelve original boarding party
members that captured this German submarine. Top-secret German
communication was obtained and as a result, proved a crucial tu rning
point in the war. Philip’s heroic action earned him the Sil ver
Star.
In 1947, Philip moved to Colorado and married Gloria Trowbridge.
They later divorced. In 1978, he married Betsy (Thomas) Trusheim.
She preceded him in death.
Philip is survived by his three daughters, Marie (Bobby) Adki son,
Katherine (Gene) Hunt, and Patricia (Don) Pauley; two step-daughters,
Dawn Gundel, and Susan Ornsbey, and one step-son, Tom
Gundel; 16 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. He als o
leaves his very best friend, Hunt Zumwalt.
Philip defended our country, was a true hero, and set a great example
of what a hard working, loving family man is all about. Philip
was a caring, gentle, yet strong man that was loved and respected by
all that knew him. He melted all our hearts.
A celebration of his life will begin with a visitation at Mar tin
Mortuary, Tuesday, February 12, from 6 - 8:00 p.m. Funeral services
will start at Martin Mortuary on Wednesday, February 13, at
11:00 a.m., followed by full Military honors at Veteran’s Memorial
Cemetery at 1:00 p.m.
