Eldon was born November 23,
1923, in Hydro, Oklahoma to
Herb and Gladis Niehues. He
g r a d u a t e d f r o m H y d r o H i g h
School in Oklahoma. Eldon met
Gerry Hudson in her senior year
and they were married October
14, 1944, just days before he left
for Army duty. When he returned,
they moved to the Grand Valley
north of Loma and there, they raised their sons, Jim, Dick, and Bill.
Eldon was a successful farmer, building the first indoor farr owing
facility on the Western Slope. He was also locally known for hi s
potatoes. He was instrumental in beginning the Farmer’s Market at
the Teller Arms and enjoyed peddling his fruits and potatoes. Eldon
donated land on the Colorado River bank south of Loma to the State
Game and Fish Reserve for developing the Loma River access.
Eldon and Gerry enjoyed their mountain property in their late r
years. He spent many enjoyable hours planting trees, building t wo
small ponds, and enjoyed feeding his fish. He enjoyed exploring on
his four wheeler, and picnicking on the Fourth of July.
Survivors include son, Jim (Dora); son, Dick (Francie), and s on,
Bill (Marti); seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. He
was preceded in death by his beloved wife on Thanksgiving day,
2012.
A visitation will be held on Monday, February 11, 2013 from 3 -
5:00 p.m. at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary. Funeral services to take
place on Tuesday, February 12 at 1:00 p.m. at the Loma Community
Church.
