Joy Mary Marfitano Boltjes was born in Ouray on March 13, 1920, to Ralph and Stella (Allaria) Marfitano, and died June 29 at the age of 93.
She attended school (grades 1-12) at Red Cliff and worked after school for the telephone company and at Mickey Walsh’s Service Station. Joy married Ivan Dump in 1941, to which four children were born: Betty, Ivan (Ernie), Edward and Leonard. Joy also worked as the Red Cliff city clerk and at Fleming Lumber in Red Cliff. In 1957, the family moved to Grand Junction where Joy worked at Mesa Federal Savings and Loan from 1959 to 1967.
In 1967, Joy married John Boltjes and moved to Otis. She helped John raise his two sons, Kelvin and Danny Boltjes. These years were very happy years. Joy worked as the Otis town clerk for several years and enjoyed gardening and traveling with John until his untimely death on May 6, 1994. Joy continued to be active in the First Presbyterian Church and other numerous activities in Otis until her move to Parrish Care in Yuma in the fall of 2011. She stayed active and interested in life, making many new wonderful friends there, and staying in touch with her family members and friends through visits, extensive letter writing and phone calls. Joy was one of those unique people who always put others first. Her children cannot remember ever hearing an unkind word said about anyone. She truly was an exemplary Christian, wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all.
Joy was preceded in death by her parents, husbands and brother, Roy Marfitano.
She is survived by three sons: Ivan E. Dumph and wife Susan, of Fairhope, Ala.; Edward R. Dumph and wife Betty (Betsy), of Hudson; Leonard R. Dumph and wife Sandra, of Mesquite, Nev.; a daughter, Betty M. Elsberry, of Grand Junction; two stepsons, Danny E. Boltjes and wife Barbara, of Colorado Springs, and Rev. Kelvin L. Boltjes and wife Colleen, of Sidney, Neb.; and 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She will be greatly missed here on Earth, but we are rejoicing that she is with her heavenly father, probably already gardening and tending the roses.
