William J. Nickey passed away Sept. 7, 2011. He was 79.
He was born July 20, 1932, and raised in Carlisle, Pa. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical education from West Chester University after completing military duties in the Army. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of BPOE No. 578, a member of Professional Ski Instructors of America — Rocky Mountain Division, and a member of National Endurance Sports Trainers of America.
Bill fondly will be remembered as the director of the YMCA Thompson Residential Camp; manager of the Carlisle Industrial Pool; a Carlisle High School physical educator, track and field coach, assistant football coach and innovator/coach of the gymnastics team.
Coach Nickey left Carlisle High School to join the physical education department of Dickinson College, where he taught archery, weight training, gymnastics, skiing, tennis and health and wellness. His Dickinson tenure included coaching track and field, soccer and golf.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William J. Nickey and Esther (Shank) Nickey Prosser; siblings, Jack Nickey and Judy Fye; and most recently his loving son, Tyler “Bo” Nickey.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 35 years, Carel (Sheffer) Nickey; daughters Carrie Perry (and husband Todd) and Laurel Brennan; sons Bill Jr. and Kirk Nickey; grandchildren Samantha, Payton and Chay Perry, Brittany Klinger, Teagan Christenson and Lowell and Russell Nickey.
To continue Bill’s ongoing contribution to health and education, his body has been donated to the Pennsylvania Humanity Gifts Registry.
