Steamboat Today - August 6, 2011

John Joseph Metz had a contagious smile, an uplifting spirit and a full heart. The father of two loved his children, nature, being with friends and family, and the Denver Broncos. John died suddenly July 22, 2011, in Steamboat Springs, where he had been residing. He was 47.
Even though John’s death was sudden, his memory, traits and character will live on in his two children, Kelly Anne Metz, 24, of Elyria, Ohio, and James Mathias Metz, 21, of Lewisburg, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by brothers Kenny and James, and father, Robert.
John touched the lives of many in Mill Creek, where he grew up. He moved there in junior high and fellow classmates and friends remember him as a man who was always happy. “The kid had a great smile,” many said.
John served in the Army and he believed in the power of the military. He carried his patriotism and pride much like a badge of honor one would see on a U.S. soldier. His other badges of honor were his children. When he spoke of his kids, his voice carried love, gratification and pure happiness. His memory will live on in these words and in the hearts and lives of these children, especially in Jimmy’s own smile and features.
John, who was just as content knee-deep in river water with a fishing pole in hand as he was relaxing in a plush recliner, was taken from us too soon. He had so much spirit and life left in him. John looked at every day like a new adventure. He’s probably watching over us, with a mischievous grin, saying, “Right on,” and shouting “Woohoo!” While there are many unanswered questions, we are content in merely knowing and loving him. He will be missed.
The family held a memorial service Aug. 4, 2011, at the family ranch in Steamboat Springs. A celebration of life party is Aug. 20 in Everett, Wash. Information about the celebration is on the John Metz Facebook page.
