Longtime Hayden resident Carla Jean Steele died July 29, 2011, at The Memorial Hospital in Craig as a result of injuries received in a motor vehicle accident. She was 48.
Carla was born Aug. 23, 1962, in Craig, the daughter of Ronald and Barbara (Velasquez) Steele. She was raised in Craig, and the family moved to Hayden when she was a freshman in high school. Carla graduated from Hayden High School in 1980.
Carla married Robin Lighthizer on June 21, 1980, and to this union four children were born. She and Robin were later divorced.
Carla worked for the Hayden Police Department for 16 years as an animal control officer and then a police officer. More recently, she was working as a security guard for Tri-State Energy in Craig.
Carla enjoyed music, her cats and dog, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She also served many years for the West Routt Fire and Ambulance District, for which she became an Intermediate EMT.
Carla is survived by her children, Anthony (Crystal) Lighthizer, of Hayden, Anna Lighthizer and her fiance, Marshall Martinez, of Hayden, Alan Lighthizer, of Mount Vernon, Wash., and Andrea Lighthizer, of Hayden; her grandchildren, William, Wynter, Whitney, Aveory, Alexzander and Alexis; her father, Ronald Steele, of Bullhead City, Ariz.; her sister, Karen (Rob) Keller, of Littleton; and her brother, Michael Steele, of New York.
She was preceded in death by her mother.
A funeral service was held Aug. 6, 2011, at Hayden Congregational Church with Pastor Janet Babish officiating. Interment followed in the Hayden Cemetery.
