Marcella G. “Marcy” Rothermel passed away March 3, 2010, at The Johnson Center in Centennial. Marcy was 86 years old. She was born in Detroit on Aug. 16, 1923, to the late Joseph and Helen Whyte.
Marcy graduated from St. Paul High School in Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., and attended St. Mary’s Commercial Business College in Detroit. She worked in the Chancery Office of the Archdiocese, where she met her future husband, Leo J. Rothermel. Leo and Marcy were married on June 21, 1947, in Grosse Pointe. Together they had eight daughters.
They moved from Michigan to Atlanta and then to Colorado in 1963, where they spent a significant amount of time in Steamboat Springs. In 1976, the Rothermels moved to Leadville and made the mountains their home. Marcy was a member of the Catholic Community in Leadville. She was also an active member in P.E.O. and the Leadville Lions Club. She enjoyed music, playing bridge, outdoor sports and skiing.
Marcy is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Leo, who died in 2003. She is survived by daughters, Kathleen Mary (Robert) Pike, of Grand Junction; Mary Patricia (Herbert) Davis, of Dove Creek; Peggy Ann (David) Ertmer, of Lafayette, Ind.; Maureen Helen (Larry) Farmer, of Littleton; Sharon Rose (Jerome) Ducombs, of Centennial; Sheila Marie (Joseph) Monzon, of Littleton; Elizabeth Grace (Walter) Seabert, of Steamboat; and Eileen Brigid Rothermel, of Frisco. Marcy is also survived by 28 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
The Rosary was recited on March 7 and Mass of Christian Burial was March 8 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Leadville. The Reverend Gus Stewart officiated, and Joan Dawson sang, accompanied by Neil Reynolds. Following the services, family received friends at the Leadville Elks Lodge. On March 9, Marcy was laid to rest with her beloved Leo at Ft. Logan National Cemetery with Chaplain Kathleen Gorman officiating.
