Pauline Patricia Raksa, beloved mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, passed peacefully on to eternal rest Monday evening, Aug. 23, 2010, at the Doak Walker Care Center with her loving family by her side.
Pauline was born Christmas Day, 1922, to John and Anna Kanyha in Windber, Pa. Her family moved to Manville, N.J., where she attended school and at the age of 18 became a seamstress for the Pavalov Co. She married Matthew Raksa on Oct. 19, 1950, and their daughter, Anita, was born three years later. Throughout her life Pauline was an exemplary homemaker, wife and mother. She was active in Sacred Heart Catholic Church Rosary Society and organized a variety of charitable events during her years in Manville. Pauline’s numerous passions included cooking and baking, gardening and dancing.
After her husband passed away in October 1989, Pauline continued to live in New Jersey for 13 more years, but visited Steamboat Springs frequently to spend time with her daughter, son-in-law and twin granddaughters, whom she adored. In August 2002, she moved to Steamboat to be closer to her family. Living in Steamboat, Pauline enjoyed the Western lifestyle that this town offered by attending rodeos, concerts, and numerous community events, while continuing to make new friends within the community.
Her loving daughter, Anita Handing; son-in-law, Larry Handing; and two granddaughters, Sara and Elizabeth, all survive Pauline. She also leaves behind one sister, Irene Allesandro, of New Jersey; as well as many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death was her husband, Matthew Raksa; her parents, John and Anna Kanyha; and two brothers, John and George.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Aug. 28 at Holy Name Catholic Church in Steamboat. Now Pauline will journey home to be laid to rest next to her beloved husband, Matthew, on Sept. 2 at a graveside service with interment at Sacred Heart Cemetery, in Manville, N.J.
In lieu of flowers, Mass offerings can be made to Holy Name Catholic Church, or donations can be made to the Doak Walker Care Center or the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association Hospice Program in Steamboat.
