Avis C. Funk, a lifelong Hayden resident, died Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at Sandrock Ridge Care Center in Craig following a lengthy illness. She was 93.
Avis was born Aug. 22, 1917, near Hayden, the daughter of Oliver Wolcott and Clara (Lyons) Hooker. She was raised and attended school in Hayden, graduating from Hayden Union High School.
Following high school, Avis attended Barnes Business College in Denver.
Avis returned to Hayden and was married to James D. Funk on April 5, 1947.
She worked as a secretary to doctors and lawyers in the Solandt Hospital Building and later as a teller/bookkeeper at Yampa Valley National Bank, where she worked for 25 years.
Avis was active in the community as a member of Farm Bureau, the American Legion Auxiliary, serving as an election judge for many years and was a longtime member of Hayden Congregational Church, where she served as organist for many years. She enjoyed playing bridge and assisting her husband in the operation of their ranch.
Avis is survived by her son, David Funk, of Hayden; niece Karen Hammersmith, of Golden; nephew Doug Hooker, of Genesee; and numerous other nieces and nephews on her husband’s side of the family. She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother Howard Hooker.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be Monday, June 13, 2011, at Hayden Congregational Church with Pastor Janet Babish and former Pastor Charles Holmgren officiating, along with officers of Hayden Chapter No. 99 of the Order of Eastern Star.
Her cremated remains will be interred next to her husband in the Hayden Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to Hayden Congregational Church or Hayden Heritage Museum, both in care of Grant Mortuary.
