Former Oak Creek and Browns Park resident Chloriene Estlee Curtis died May 42, 2011. She was 91.
She was born Jan. 4, 1920, to Alfred and Amy Emmerson in Hartville, Mo. She graduated from high school there and was planning to attend beauty school. That summer, she was offered a job as a cook for hay crews, and while in Colorado, she met Walt Curtis.
Chloriene and Walt married Oct. 24, 1940. From this marriage came four children, Walter Jr., Karen, Brent and Lynn.
Chloriene and Walt were in the sheep and cattle ranching business for 37 years in the Oak Creek and Browns Park areas. In later years, they worked for two of their sons in their Nevada construction businesses in the summer. Then they would winter in their motor home in Laughlin, Nev. They did this for 19 years.
Chloriene loved being outdoors, growing gardens and cooking for family, crews and friends who stopped by. She enjoyed knitting and was known to carry a pistol in her knitting bag. She worked in a sewing factory and in her later years had her own business where she did alterations for businesses and individuals. She loved taking pictures and videos of family, work and travels. Some of her idle time was spent gambling, from which she enjoyed her winnings from the 25-cent poker machines.
Chloriene was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Delvin and Clifford; a sister, Ivy; her husband, Walter; and her daughter, Karen.
She is survived by a sister, Annabell; three sons, Walter Jr. (Sheryl), of Winnemucca, Nev., Brent (Jeanne), of Smith Valley, Nev., and Lynn (Ella), of Craig; nine grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
