TWO LIVES LOST IN AUTO ACCIDENT EAST OF MINTURN SUNDAY MORNING. Mr. and Mrs. John Hanson [i.e. Hansen] meet death and ten others injured in three-car tragedy.
An automobile accident involving three cars and twelve people, near the foot of Battle Mountain early Sunday morning, resulted in the death of two, and the injury of the other ten.
John Hanson [sic.], and his wife, Jewel Hanson [sic.] 30, are the dead, both of Red Cliff.
The injured are: Malcomb McLEOD, Jr., 24, of Red Cliff, in whose car the Hansons [sic.] were riding.
Elmer LUNDGREN and his wife and Martha ENGSTROM of Gypsum, and Carl BORGESON, all in Lundgren's car.
Orsen POWELL, Faye MILLER, of Denver, Robert CLAMMER, Harold LEFTEVICH, Leonard VEDIVITCH, riding in a car driven by POWELL, all of Minturn, and employed by the Gordon Construction Co., on the Battle Mountain highway project.
The accident occurred at about three o'clock Sunday morning, and the parties were returning from a dance at Gilman for which Lundgren's orchestra had been playing.
McLEOD's car passed the other two on the highway a short distance east of the Cross creek bridge, traveling west. His car hit the cement railing of the bridge on the right hand side, ripping that side of the car away and throwing it across the bridge onto the left side of the highway. HANSON [sic.] struck outside the car, breaking his neck and was instantly dead. Mrs. HANSON [sic.] was pinned in the wreckage, but was living when extracted from under the car. She died some three hours after being taken to the hospital in Gilman.
LUNDGREN was following the McLEOD car, and when the crash occurred stopped his car almost instantly within seventy-five feet of the wreck to avoid hitting it. POWELL was unable to stop his car until it crashed into LUNDGREN's ahead of him, and it was in this smash up that the others were injured.
Marth ENGSTROM had a broken collar bone, BORGESON cuts and bruises, Mrs. LUNDGREN minor bruises, Mr. LUNDGREN suffering face lacerations and bruises.
In the POWELL car most seriously injured was Faye MILLER who suffered a fractured jaw bone and head lacerations. Harold LEFTIVICH had two broken fingers, one almost severed.
McLEOD suffered face lacerations and an injury to one knee. It was thought at first the latter was broken, but that does not now appear to be the case. He has been cared for in the Empire Zinc hospital since the accident.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Eagle Wednesday for Mr. and Mrs. Hanson [sic.], Rev. Mr. CASSELMAN preaching the discourse. Scores of friends of these young people from Battle Mountain were in attendance to pay their last respects to the deceased, who had met death so suddenly and tragically. Mrs. Hanson [sic.] formerly lived in Eagle and Gypsum, and had many friends and relatives in the two communities. Following the church services, the funeral cortege moved to Gypsum, where the bodies were laid to rest in Cedar Hill cemetery, by the Andre Mortuary. Mrs. Hanson [sic.] leaves three small children by a former marriage.

Anna Jewel Hanson [sic.] was born in Adair county, Oklahoma, January 27, 1908, and died September 24, 1939.
At the age of fourteen years Jewel gave her heart to God and became a member of the Methodist church. She was a devoted Christian and her tireless efforts to help others to lead a more righteous life was a great pleasure to the older members of the church. They all felt she had a wonderful understanding of human nature and knew so well how to reach the better nature of a person.
She was a sweet and loveable [sic.] girl, a loving, devoted wife and mother, and it is with a deep and aching sorrow we realize we are deprived of her dear presence. Though the way seems dark and dreary without her, we know we are promised a happy meeting in the land that knows no sorrow or death.
Jewel leaves to mourn her untimely death three small children, a mother and stepfather, four sisters and three brothers, besides a host of friends and other relatives. All members of the family were here for the funeral services except two brothers.
Rev. CASSELMAN read the last rites at the double service held in Eagle on Wednesday, September 27, for her and her husband, and the two were laid side by side in Cedar Hill cemetery at Gypsum.
