Viola Esther Quist died on February
12, 2013, after a brief illness
and a long and rich life. She
was 96 years young.
Viola was born and spent her
early years in Portland, Oregon,
where she graduated from US
Grant High School in 1934. She
obtained a secretarial diploma
from Northwest Business College.
After working a number of years
as a bookkeeper, she moved to
Colorado to attend the University
o f D e n v e r . S h e r e c e i v e d h e r
Bachelor's degree in Hotel and
Restaurant Management (1950).
In 1949, Viola married John A.
Quist. They moved to western
Colorado in the late 1950s, and in
1961, they settled permanently in
Grand Junction to raise their three
children. Viola worked as a secretary/
bookkeeper in addition to
spending time at home with the children.
Eventually, she had her own business preparing tax returns and
providing accounting services to individuals. After she retired, Viola
traveled extensively in Europe, China, the Caribbean, and cruised
"around the world". In her spare time, Viola always had a needlework
project in hand. She loved to knit for family and friends. She
knitted and donated numerous caps to cancer survivors through local
hospitals and over 300 sweaters for needy children through a
worldwide Christian organization.
Viola was active in the community throughout her life. She was a
member of the Redlands Community Church and served as a Mesa
County election judge for primary and general elections for 30
years. Viola was active in Altrusa International and held a number
of offices in that organization during her 25 year membership. For
over 20 years, Viola spent Saturdays as a volunteer at the Colorado
Welcome Center in Fruita. She volunteered for AARP's tax aid for
the handicapped and was a counselor and secretary for SCORE (Senior
Corps of Retired Volunteers). While living at Lakeside in her
later years, Viola served in a variety of capacities in the Lakeside
Homeowners Association.
Viola was proud of her children, Jeanette Lucille Quist and Carl
Robert Quist (Diane) of Grand Junction, and Charlotte Frances
Quist (Victor Nettles) of Dillon, Montana. She had six grandchildren;
seven great-grandchildren, and four step-great-grandchildren.
Viola asked to be cremated. A memorial service will be held at
2:00 p.m. on April 20 at Callahan-Edfast.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the
Redlands Community Church.
