Yampa resident Kevin Michael McCoy died Jan. 23, 2009. He was 25.
To in any way contain the life, love, humor and spirit of Kevin McCoy in words is impossible and not necessary. Without exception, everyone who knows Kevin holds in their hearts stories and memories that come pouring out when they hear about his all-too-soon death.
Born in Glenwood Springs on Feb. 1, 1983, Kevin attended the McCoy school until it closed and then went to Eagle, graduating from Eagle Valley High School in 2001. He joined the Navy straight out of school and graduated from Great Lakes Naval Recruit Training Command in Illinois in October 2001, moving on to achieve honors from A-school at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., in February 2002. His home port was Fort Hueneme in Oxnard, Calif., as a member of NMCB3. Kevin did tours in Okinawa, Japan; Jordan; Africa; and Iraq. Doing an amazing job of keeping in touch with all those who loved him here at home, it wasn't unusual to get a phone call in the middle of the night and be happy about it. In the Navy, he just added another family to his roster.
He brought home to Colorado his beautiful wife Jennifer Lagos - they married Nov. 22, 2006 - and followed up with a son, Cooper Michael, born June 12, 2007. We all look forward to welcoming their second child in September. The family is living in Yampa.
Kevin started working for Union Pacific Railroad out of Bond as a signalman in 2006, joining his father and brother as railroaders and another family to his roster.
He was preceded in death by grandparents Thomas and Cora McCoy and Manford Miller.
He is survived by wife, Jennifer, and son, Cooper; parents, Mike and Shelly McCoy, of Bond; in-laws, Mike and Linda Lagos, of California; brother Kelsy, sister-in-law Holly and their children Allissa, Delany and Cody, all of Bond; brother-in-law Shawn Lagos; grandparents Marilyn Miller of Pueblo, Benito and Mollie Lagos of California, and Skip and Molly Ramsey of California; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.
There are things we need to do for Kevin because his life was so short and he would hate these tears: hug your wife, hug your family and friends, go snowmobiling, fishing, hunting, anything else outdoors, wrestle someone to the ground and tickle them until they beg you to stop, play a prank, stop and help somebody (he had an uncanny ability of showing up when you needed him the most), hug your kids (life is short), and don't say good-bye (he hated good-byes).
The family is asking friends and acquaintances to write down their favorite memory of Kevin and send copies of photos of him to Big Hat Ranch, P.O. Box 255, McCoy, CO 80463.
In lieu of flowers, an account has been set up at American National Bank for Kevin's children. A celebration of his life was held Saturday at the McCoy school.
