Col. Kenneth 'Rex' Rexrode, a U.S. Army veteran, passed away Jan. 29, 2008, at home in Clark. He was 72.
He was born Oct. 23, 1935, in San Antonio, Texas, to the late Emily and Harry Rexrode, (LTC U.S. Army, ret). Rex joined the Army in 1954 and served our country for 30 years with honor as an Intelligence and Electronic Warfare Officer, instructor, staff director, joint and combined operator, leader and unit commander. He held senior positions on Division and Corps staffs and at Headquarters Department of Army in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations. He served in several joint positions, including service with the U.S. Naval Security Group and also with the Third U.S. Marine Amphibious Force, in Vietnam. He served as one of two senior U.S. Officers on the Shah of Iran's Supreme Commander's Staff. At his time of retirement in 1984, Rex held the title of Vice Director of the Joint Electronic Warfare Center at Kelly AFB in San Antonio, Texas. He held a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Saint Mary College in Leavenworth, Kansas. During his 30-year career, he was awarded the Legion of Merit with First Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with Second Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star, and the Army Commendation Medal with First Oak Leaf Cluster. Living in so many foreign places only made him realize how blessed we all are to be Americans.
After retiring from the Army, Rex worked for Raytheon (formerly E-Systems) in St. Petersburg, Fla., for 10 years as a business developer in electronic warfare. Final retirement brought him to Clark, where he spent much time trout fishing at Steamboat Lake. He always said, "Even if you don't catch any fish, the beauty of the mountains makes the day worthwhile."
He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Barbara Grenovich Rexrode; son Michael Gould of Clark; daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Rudy Garza of San Antonio, Texas; daughter and son-in-law Emily and Andrew Seawell of Alpharetta, Ga.; sister and brother-in-law Nancy and Guy Douglas of Aurora; aunt Cathy Potts of Lilburn, Ga.; plus nephews, nieces and cousins.
Rex was devoted to God, family and the U.S. He served as a model of honor and integrity to those who knew him. He will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the North Routt Community Charter School's outdoor enrichment activities, at 54200 Routt County Road 52, Clark, CO, 80428. Rex always said he would have loved to attend this school as it teaches the students so many wonderful outdoor activities and to love our Rocky Mountain beauty.
