Gene was born on Oct. 27, 1927 in Tipton, Okla., to John and Madge (Berryman) Funderburg.
He graduated from Lawton High in Oklahoma, where he was active in football, basketball and academics. Gene was also an Eagle Scout. After graduation, he attended Texas A&M University where he enrolled in the Air Cadet Program. Gene joined the Army Air Corp after his freshman year and was sent to Europe as a P51 fighter pilot. Gene also was awarded the Soldiers Medal and Air Medal for distinguished service and acts of heroism while in the military. He was honorably discharged June 7, 1947.
Gene married Dorothy Brooks on May 19, 1945, in Walters, Okla. After the war, he worked at Ft. Sill with the civil service, and retired in 1974. Gene received his Realtor's license and sold real estate in Lawton for the next 20 years. After Dorothy's death in 1999, he married Pat Robinson in November 2000.
The welfare and happiness of his family was Gene's primary concern throughout his life.
