Former Oak Creek resident Ethel Eva Myers Steele died at her home in Grand Junction on March 23, 2008, after a long and fruitful life. She was 95.
Ethel was born in Oak Creek on Oct. 17, 1912. She went to grade and high schools in Oak Creek, and married Carl M. Steele in 1931. Three sons were born of that union. The couple resided in Oak Creek for many years. In the later years after the death of her husband, Ethel made her home in Grand Junction.
Ethel was an accomplished community advocate who served on the school board, the town board, taught rural Trout Creek School and supervised and cooked for the school hot lunch program. She traveled the Alcan Highway and worked at an Alaskan gold mine. Her family owned and operated the Apex Mine, and Ethel was the first female shot firer in the state of Colorado. Her family and many friends will miss her.
Ethel is survived by her son, Carl Duane Steele of Grand Junction, and Bonita Steele of Cory; sons Gordon and his wife Betty of Anaconda, Mont., and Reginald and his wife Virginia of Mount Gambier, South Australia. Her grandchildren Marcia Slosson, Tony Steele, Chad Steele, Russell Steele, Spring Phillips, Evan Steele and Angie Butterworth, also survive her.
Ethel was preceded in death by her husband Carl M. Steele, twin sister Vida Davis, sisters Thelma Clark and Letha Odendahl, and brother Melvin Myers. Her grandson Morgan Steele, great-grandson Julian Eliasen and her good friend Paul Wegener also preceded her in death.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service is planned for August.
