Steamboat Today - April 10, 2008

Steve Maloney, a longtime resident of Steamboat Springs, passed away peacefully at his home April 4, 2008. His courageous battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer likely acquired from exposure to chemical agents in Vietnam, is finally ended. He was 61.
Steve was born Aug. 18, 1946, in Des Moines, Iowa, to John and Helen Ann Maloney. He was raised on a farm in Bondurant, Iowa. He graduated from Dowling High School in Des Moines and received a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Iowa State University in 1968. He then served a tour of duty in Vietnam with the U.S. Army.
Steve moved to Steamboat in 1971 to explore the west and enjoy the mountains. He worked as a civil engineer for more than 30 years, most of which were with Civil Design Consultants. His work in the Yampa Valley can be seen in the beautiful and popular Yampa River Core Trail and the James Brown Soul Center of the Universe Bridge, as well as many city and county roads and bridges.
Steve's true passion was running. He could be seen daily, in all kinds of weather, running the trails and roads throughout the area. His discipline and competitive nature made him a formidable marathoner and ultramarathoner. Steve served as the course director for the Steamboat Springs Marathon from 1983 to 2007, often firing the starting gun and then joining in on the race himself. He competed in more than 44 distance races, including Boston, Pikes Peak, Wasatch and Leadville. He completed his last two marathons in summer 2006.
Steve also was an avid mountaineer and traveler, especially enjoying backpacking and climbing peaks. His travels took him to various destinations including the Himalayas, Thailand, Australia, India, Europe and the Galapagos Islands. His time spent in the high country with friends also brought him much joy. Steve loved to play games, and as anyone who knew him can attest, he loved to win. And he always did.
Steve is survived by his wife, Maureen (Mo); his uncle and aunt Robert and Dorothy Downing, of Glenview, Ill.; brother Mike Maloney and his wife, Connie, of Bettendorf, Iowa; sister Molly Nemetz and her husband, Dave, of Ogden, Utah; and nieces Kate Nemetz and Megan Maloney. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Helen Ann; his sister, Catherine Ann; and his nephew, Shane Nemetz.
Steve's many friends, co-workers and loving family will miss him profoundly. His quiet strength, incredible intelligence and gentle spirit made him an inspiration to all of us.
