Hayden resident Chuck Fulton died recently at the age of 89.
Charles Edgar Fulton was born Dec. 12, 1918, along Dry Fork near Elkhead, where his parents Charles and Paroda homesteaded. As the importance of a good education and the challenges of homesteading grew, the family of seven moved to Hayden. Chuck remembered the first orange he ever ate at the age of 9. All five children continued their education at Colorado A&M in Fort Collins.
Chuck's college education was interrupted by World War II. He served three years as a glider pilot, stationed in England. He flew in support of the invasions of Normandy and Holland. Flying became a lifelong passion of his, flying for the last time in the summer of 2007, an oxygen bottle between his legs and a grin from ear to ear.
Following his military service, Chuck returned to Hayden, where he remained for the rest of life, raising his family on the ranch that his parents owned. As an active member in the community, Chuck was elected county commissioner in 1956. He also served on the school board for many years. He is remembered best by the community for his talent with his team of draft horses; giving sleigh rides to the church and Girl Scouts, as well as competing in the county fair until he was well into his eighties. He was always concerned with wildlife and open space preservation, prompting him to put his Elkhead property into a conservation easement in 2005.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Phyllis; sister, Margaret Williams; sons Vance and Lee Fulton; daughters Charlotte Maugham and Rebecca Wattles; 10 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Services were held May 17 at Hayden Congregational Church. The Hayden American Legion Post No. 89 performed military honors. Memorial fund donations may be sent to the First National Bank of the Rockies.
